How Gharana looks, sounds and speaks

Everything on this page is read from the live site, not from a deck. If you are briefing a designer, building a vendor catalogue, or writing a WhatsApp broadcast, start here — and if the code and this page ever disagree, the code is right.

Gharana
01 · Essence

An eighty-year-old shop, online

Gharana began in 1945 as Sharma Murti Bhandar, a family murti shop in Himachal Pradesh. The brand is that shop's name and its manner carried onto the web — not a startup that borrowed an old aesthetic.

Name

Gharana

Hindi for a lineage or house — a family tradition of craft passed down. Always one word, capital G. Never GHARANA in running text, never Gharana.app in prose.

Tagline

Apni Sajawat Ki Dukan

"The shop for your own adornment." The one tagline, used everywhere: in the logo lockup under the wordmark, the header, the footer, emails and the JSON-LD. Set in Plus Jakarta Sans italic — gold on dark. It is read from SITE.tagline, never retyped.

What we are

A heritage house of Indian craft with four worlds under one roof — Devotion, Handloom, Craft, and Home & Kitchen — sourced direct from artisan families, with corporate gifting, wholesale and custom orders built on the same workshop.

What we are not

A marketplace of anonymous listings, a discount shop, or a “religious artifacts” store. The last one matters: it excludes half the catalogue and every buyer who is not buying for a puja.

Gharana

Primary lockup

Light surfaces. Tile, wordmark, tagline — <Logo />.

Gharana

Dark-surface lockup

Cream wordmark, gold tagline — <Logo tone="light" />. Never the maroon one on dark.

Mark at 64pxMark at 32pxMark at 16px

Mark

App icon, favicon, social avatar, mobile header. Shown at 64 · 32 · 16 px.

Use it like this

  • Clear space on every side equal to the height of the घ glyph.
  • Minimum 120 px wide for the lockup; below that, switch to the mark alone.
  • Mark alone from 16 px up — it was drawn to survive the favicon.
  • Light lockup on cream or white; dark lockup on the heritage gradient or a photograph darkened to at least 60%.

Never

  • Recolour the tile, or set the घ in anything but gold.
  • Replace घ with a Latin G. The Devanagari is the point.
  • Stretch, rotate, outline, or add a drop shadow to the logo file.
  • Put the maroon wordmark on a dark or busy background.
  • Hand-type the wordmark or the tagline — always use the <Logo /> component (or the SVG off-site), which reads both from one source.
03 · Colour

Maroon, temple gold, cream and ink

Four colours carry the brand; everything else supports them. Click any swatch to copy its hex.

Core

Heritage gradient

#1A0A00 → #3D1500 → #1A0A00 at 135°. The dark surface for heroes, the announcement bar and the footer. Follows the active world.

Extended

States

Separate from the accent on purpose — a warning must never read as emphasis.

Contrast — measured, not estimated

WCAG 2.1 ratios. Body text needs 4.5:1. The two “large only” rows are the ones that go wrong in practice.

SamplePairRatioPasses
AaInk on cream18.49:1AAA
AaMaroon on cream9.32:1AAA
AaWhite on maroon9.47:1AAA
AaLamp gold on heritage10.06:1AAA
AaStone-600 on cream5.90:1AA
AaGold-700 on cream5.55:1AA
AaStone-500 on cream3.98:1Large only
AaGold-500 on cream3.01:1Large only

Two rules follow. Temple gold (gold-500) is for ornament and icons, not text — use gold-700 when gold has to be read. And small grey text must be stone-600 or darker; stone-500 is too faint below 18 px.

04 · The four worlds

One house, four accents

Each world re-skins the whole site. Setting data-world on the page swaps the maroon scale for that world's accent, so every button, link and focus ring follows automatically — the maroon token is a slot, not a fixed colour.

05 · Type

Plus Jakarta Sans, and Devanagari

One typeface across the whole site — headings, body and UI — with tight negative tracking on display sizes, and a proper Devanagari face so Hindi never falls back to a system font.

Display · Plus Jakarta Sans 700

Aa

Gharana · Apni Sajawat Ki Dukan

Headings, prices, the wordmark. Bold 700 with tight tracking. Variable font, full 200–800 axis.

Body & UI · Plus Jakarta Sans

Aa

Hand-painted wax diyas, filled flush and ready to light.

Body, UI, buttons, forms. 400 for reading, 500 for UI, 600 for emphasis. Same family as display.

The eyebrow

The Gharana Story

12 px, semibold, uppercase, tracked out to 0.14em (tracking-eyebrow), with a short hairline rule before it, drawn by the CSS. Introduces nearly every section — always <Eyebrow>.

Headings

It began with Sharma Murti Bhandar

Fluid semantic tokens (text-display, text-h1–h4) via <Heading> or a bare <h2>, balanced wrapping, one phrase in the accent colour — never more than one.

08 · Imagery

Warm light, real pieces, honest labels

Photography sells hand-made things more than any sentence can, so it has the strictest rules on this page.

The hamper set: one ivory-linen backdrop, soft daylight from the left, one shadow, no text in the frame.

Do

  • Warm, soft, directional daylight. One natural shadow.
  • Cream, ivory linen or warm wood as the ground — never cold white or grey.
  • Show scale: a hand, a known object, or a size in the caption. It is the top reason murtis are returned.
  • Keep the product exactly as it is — its colour, its carving, its imperfections.
  • Label styled or generated compositions as references, and approve photographs of the real item before dispatch.

Don’t

  • Text, prices, watermarks or supplier phone numbers inside the frame.
  • AI “beautifying” a murti’s face or carving. It misrepresents a handmade piece.
  • A generated image as a product-feed photo — Merchant Center needs the exact item shipped.
  • Supplier catalogue shots with someone else’s branding.
  • Licensed characters or logos on anything we photograph.

Icons

Lucide, outline only, stroke 1.6–2. Sized with the text beside them (13 px in a trust row, 18–22 px as a feature icon). No emoji as section markers, and no filled icon sets mixed in.

09 · Voice

A family shop that happens to be online

Warm but not gushing, specific rather than grand, and always honest about what a thing is and what it costs. Gharana talks like the person behind the counter who has done this for forty years — not like a campaign.

10 · Claims

What we can say, and what we cannot

An unsubstantiated number on a commercial page is a Consumer Protection Act exposure, not just a credibility risk. The rule is simple: if we cannot show a record for it, it does not go on the site.

Safe to say

  • Since 1945 · 80+ years of craft
  • Began as Sharma Murti Bhandar, Himachal Pradesh
  • 400+ pieces in the collection · four worlds under one roof
  • Free delivery on every order across India
  • GST invoice with HSN codes on every order
  • Hand-painted wax diyas made in our own workshop

Not without a record

  • Customer counts — “10,000+ homes”, “500K+ customers”
  • Artisan or partner counts — “1000+ artisans”, “500+ B2B partners”
  • Volume claims — “10K products delivered monthly”
  • “Museum-grade”, “best in India”, “100% authentic” without proof
  • A price on a corporate hamper — they are quoted per brief
  • A discount rate without its threshold — “30% off” alone reads as a rate anyone gets

Every claim in the right-hand column has appeared on this site and been removed. If a real record now supports one of them, it can come back — consistently, on every page at once, never on one page and not another.
